How Many Calories Do 10,000 Steps Burn?

By the GenieFit team · 5 min read

Short answer: for a 70 kg person of average height, 10,000 steps burn about 260–300 kcal of extra energy. If your app tells you 500, it's flattering you. Here's the honest math — and a free calculator for your own numbers.

The math, step by step

  1. Steps → distance. Your walking stride is about 0.414 × your height. At 170 cm, that's ~70 cm per step, so 10,000 steps ≈ 7 km.
  2. Distance → calories. Level walking costs roughly 0.53 kcal per kg of body weight per km, on top of what you'd burn sitting still. 70 kg × 7 km × 0.53 ≈ 260 kcal.

Two things scale that number: weight (a 90 kg person burns ~335 kcal on the same walk) and stride (taller people cover more ground per step). Pace, terrain and stairs add on top.

Net vs gross: why apps disagree

Sit on the couch for the 85 minutes that 10,000 steps take, and you'd still burn ~100 kcal just existing. Many pedometers add that baseline into the "calories burned" they display — the gross figure — which is how 280 becomes 380+. For weight management, the number that matters is the net extra cost of the walk, because your baseline burn is already counted in your daily calorie target. Our steps calculator and the GenieFit app both report the honest net figure.

What 10,000 steps is actually worth

Weight10,000 steps ≈In food terms
55 kg~205 kcal1 plain dosa
70 kg~260 kcal2 chapatis with ghee
85 kg~320 kcal1 samosa
100 kg~375 kcal1 slice of pizza

That last column is the sobering part: an hour and a half of walking ≈ one samosa. Walking is genuinely good for you — blood sugar, blood pressure, mood, sleep — but as a weight-loss tool it works with food tracking, not instead of it.

Is 10,000 even the right target?

The number comes from a 1965 Japanese pedometer marketing campaign ("manpo-kei", the 10,000-step meter) — not from research. Modern studies find health benefits rise steeply up to ~7,000–8,000 steps/day and keep improving more gradually after. The best target is one you'll hit on a boring Tuesday: consistency beats ambition.

Frequently asked questions

Can I lose weight walking 10,000 steps a day?

Yes — an extra ~280 kcal/day is about 1 kg/month, if your eating stays constant. Pair it with food tracking so one snack doesn't silently cancel the walk.

Why does my fitness app show a bigger number?

It's likely reporting gross burn (baseline included), which inflates the figure 30–50%. Net burn is the honest number.

Do slow and fast walking burn different calories per step?

Per km, the cost is fairly stable at normal paces; brisk walking above ~6.5 km/h starts costing meaningfully more.
